Australian union catalogues

Union catalogues reveal information about the collections of more than one library. They are a way for groups of libraries to share information about their collections in a consistent way, both for cataloguing and inter-library loan purposes.

Australia's National Bibliographic Database (NBD) is a national union catalogue of the catalogued holdings of the participating Australian libraries, maintained by the National Library of Australia. The NBD is accessible through the KiNETICA service, and it comprises catalogue records created by Australian libraries, records from other national bibliographic agencies (internationally), as well as information indicating the holdings of these items by Australian libraries. Libraries, other organisations and individuals may register to use KiNETICA. KiNETICA customers may elect to pay a subscription or a fee based on the number of searches they undertake.

To increase resource sharing, a number of libraries cooperate to develop other regional or consortia catalogues. For example:

Kinetica CJK Service The Kinetica CJK (Chinese Japanese Korean) Service aims to support Australia's closer relationship with Asia by providing Australian libraries and their clients with improved access to the distributed national collection of Chinese, Japanese and Korean materials.
Australian University Museums Online (AUMOL) The AUMOL database is a union catalogue listing the research collection holdings of museums in Australian universities. Currently, holdings from four universities can be searched on the AUMOL database.
